But here’s what’s most important: This is another excellent song from Walker that suggests Deafman Glance is an album to get excited about. But it has the same dusky, strung-out aesthetic of “Telluride Speed,” with Walker’s new vocal approach settling into a mumbly, worn speak-sing. Moving at a gentle rush, it’s the more brisk of the two, propelled by liquid jazz lines and embellished with occasional synth flourishes. Compared to “Telluride Speed,” “Opposite Middle” might seem a more logical outgrowth of Walker’s past work. Today, he’s back with another one called “Opposite Middle.” The song sits alongside “Telluride Speed,” together forming the centerpiece of Deafman Glance. We previously heard “ Telluride Speed,” which aside from making impressively convincing use of rock flute, also seemed to represent Walker’s goal: Built on languid, dreamy passages but periodically ruptured by burnt jazz-rock guitar flareups, “Telluride Speed” showed Walker bringing a distinct level of care and attention to how he was crafting the bleary new music from Deafman Glance. When Walker first discussed the LP, he said he had tried to get away from jams and improvisation in favor of more controlled arrangements that nodded to the deep history of post-rock in his native Chicago. And Deafman Glance might just be the greatest leap he’s taken yet.
Over the years, we’ve heard Walker take his virtuosic guitar skills to pretty disparate places - lush, psychedelic jazz-folk on 2015’s Primrose Green gave way to a more haggard and nocturnal sound on 2016’s Golden Sings That Have Been Sung.
Or this November.At the end of February, Ryley Walker announced his latest album Deafman Glance. With any luck, enough hope to get that crowd through til the next show. These two sets were not just a great way to spend a warm May Day evening, but also a reminder of the fulfillment that comes with adventurousness, empathy, and a sense of community. It was particularly great to hear “Sunken Waltz,” “Crystal Frontier,” and their excellent take on Love’s classic “Alone Again Or.” Tuesday’s sold out crowd was given a healthy dose of the newest record as well as choice cuts spanning the group’s career.
Newer songs “Under the Wheels” and “Voices in the Field” may speak of these troubling times, but they took on the urgency of a rallying song of protest, shirking the inaction brought about by fear. The set was anything but somber, as they are of a special breed of band that never loses the cohesiveness and attention to detail of their records whilst managing to elevate the songs to an entirely new emotional level. Born of that stress and anxiety is their newest record, The Thread That Keeps Us. Walker mentioned coming back through Boston with a full band during an autumn tour supporting the new record out later this month. And the other half, two cuts off of 2016’s Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, felt fresh as ever. Cuts off of Walker’s upcoming record Deafman Glance - “Telluride Speed” and “Spoil with the Rest” - suggest that this album may be among his best yet. Following previously released singles Telluride Speed and Opposite Middle, Stereogum says it perfectly sets the stage for the new atmosphere of Walker’s music. The album is due to be released on May 18th.
